A
INTO OUR PAST

One interesting story that Jim Devers rediscovered while going through our archives was when the agreement was altered in about 1923, as I recall.

It seems a wireman was on his way to work on his bicycle, through downtown Bakersfield with his bag of knobs and tubes, as well as a step ladder, when He was distracted by a good looking gal departing a trolly. He lost his balance, apparently looking back at her, got tangled in the ladder, and broke his leg.

It brought to everyone's attention what an unsafe practice it was to carry a ladder on a bicycle, and all three Union contractors signed an interim agreement that to do so would no longer be required.

Just another example of how times change , and so does our agreement. It is a living document like the Constituion of the United States.

Often newcomers don't understand why our agreements are written the way they are but there is a reason for every word and the language has been tested through the years.

A brief, well written history of our Local including some old "scanned" documents and a lot of cool things could periodically be put on this page.

Nothing is etched in stone, this is only a SAMPLE!
